As usual, high-end USB adapters like this will not work on older hardware. What many don't realize is that the i3, i5 and i7 CPUs that are older than 5 years simply cannot handle HDMI to USB input. The USB 3.0 controller chipsets built-in were total garbage up until 2010. After that, everybody switched to the proper USB 3 version and all has been well.

Magewell claims it will work over USB2.0 -- but end users have found that's only at Standard Definition, not HD.

Laptops that struggle with this device:

Any AMD "A" or "E" series. The only one from this series that won't choke is the WalMart exclusive HP 'Sonoma', a red colored laptop with the updated USB 3 chipset.

Laptops that will work best:

All modern intel i5 and i7 CPU based units. Celeron, Pentium and i3 lack the required built-in chipsets.

Apple Mac OS X is a crapshoot; depending upon the current OS update, the Magewell may or may not work. There's no way to determine which one will, so it's best to avoid Macs altogether, unless they've running Windows on it (oh, the irony!)

Desktops are highly recommended for this device!
